We spoke with María Inés López-Ibor, professor of psychiatry at the UCM, about mental health and feeling of sadness.
Is it normal to feel sad? At what point does a situation of distress, sadness, or unease become a mental health problem? Questions about sadness often stem from confusion: mental health is not only a struggle to not fall to extremes, it also consists of living as fully as possible. Sadness is a normal feeling, which we must know and manage properly to live better.
Knowing how to manage sadness and discover its possible risks will help us live happier. Trying to understand our feelings helps us profoundly on a daily basis. We have to distinguish between sadness, depression, stress, etc., to get to know ourselves better and to temper our subjective perceptions to reality.
